Eye Candy

Celebrities have always been fashion leaders and innovators, particularly musicians.  Ever since Madonna’s cone bra, musicians have been dressing more and more outrageous for their performances and red carpet appearances.  Lady Gaga in particular has had an enormous impact on the fashion industry.  From her meat dresses, ridiculous wigs, sunglasses, shoes, and headdresses she has created a name for herself in the fashion world.  Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry have also made their mark on the red carpet for their candy dresses and neon ensembles.  I don’t particularly suggest wearing a cheese box on your head or a fried chicken necklace, but nonetheless I do think it’s refreshing to see more creativity in style.  Many fashion designers create looks that are impractical, but fashion is not about practicality, it is about inspiration and originality.


One fashionable item that captures this bizarre celebrity look while still remaining ready-to-wear is Mercura sunglasses.  Recently featured in numerous magazines including Vogue Portugal, DISfunkshion, Marie Claire, and Oyster, Mercura offers designer works of art for your peepers.  “Baroque and Rococo styles influence their work, as do psychedelic art, and punk” (Chernyaev, 2012).  The duo behind Mercura is sisters Rachel Cohen-Lunning and Merrilee Lichtenstein Cohen.  “These two designers have been creating and selling over the top, fashion forward sunglasses and body art straight out of the Hotel Chelsea since 1976 and have been going strong ever since” (“Mercura on fire,” 2010).

            While Mercura sunglasses may be a bit pricier than your average shades, they are undoubtedly innovative, fashionable, and unique.

    This is interesting! I definitely agree that Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry & Lady Gaga are successful at wearing the title of “Fashion Innovators”! A fried chicken necklace? Wow, nothing surprises me with that one anymore! But I will stand in agreement with the fact that fashion is not about being practical! So more power to all of them!

    Thank you for sharing about Mercura sunglasses. They are fun, cute and I don’t think they could go out of style just because they keep changing the details on them!
